ALBUM OF THE WEEK
Avalon Emerson — Written into Changes
“Once I could recite all the lines by heart, but now I forgot ‘em all”
The pop and rock stars want to be DJs. The DJs want to be pop and rock stars. As the world turns toward the dance floor, Avalon Emerson is building a world of movement and freedom that exists outside the club.
Against all odds, Avalon Emerson’s Upstate indie-pop is a natural extension of her Berghain club foundations. There’s a sense of melody that permeates the hypnotic pulse. If her first proper album with a band was too low-key, her second “& the Charm” album finds a perfect balance between Emerson the songwriter and Emerson the performer. Written Into Changes explodes the headphone wandering of its predecessor into driving with the windows down and the volume all the way up.
Life doesn’t give you warnings. One day, you leave the club for the last time as the person you were. You can always go back, but things will be different. Written Into Changes is about time and change, about life passing by, about being “too young to die, too old to break through.” The dance floor is an escape, and reality is waiting when you get home. Might as well make the best of it.
5 NEW SONGS YOU NEED RIGHT NOW
Paxslim — “10 AM IN LAGOS”
Paxslim and producer Haram on a 2023 Tua and Tyreek run right now.
Sira Faal — “Anomalie”
This really has it all: chill German raps, various North Face products, footy, people making out and smoking cigarettes, a pulsating beat that sounds like your night is about to start getting blurry, “Oops I did it again.” I’m influenced.
SlimeGoon9 — “Meet Me In Person”
Not many rappers can come back after a six-year sentence and sound like they haven’t lost a step. Not many rappers have a name as good as SlimeGoon9 either.
B0YG1RL & Prblm — “Je M’appelle Tété”
Bailé funk and Miami and it’s almost summer and I need to be outside.
SSSoundGawd & Mavo — “Aura Salad”
Every time I feel like we’ve hit peak Naijapiano I get pulled back in. Mavo’s called his music “Burbur music” and “luxury music” and yes he’s also developed his own slang language.
THROWBACK TRACK
I was in Arizona the other week and had the desert-driven urge to revisit this classic. Then I looked it up and found out it hit #15 on the Hot 100??????? We used to be a country where “Ghetto Cowboy” was a top 20 hit. Imagine. You better count your money.
