ALBUM OF THE WEEK
Ethel Cain â Perverts
I respect anyone who hits Obamaâs playlist and descends to such unrelenting darkness knowing itâs going to alienate a majority of the new fans sheâs gained in the wake of her 2022 breakout. Want to make everything a joke? Donât complain when you get 90 minutes of creepy drone music.
Anyway, welcome to the music post. Every Friday Iâm going to tell you what you need to hear:
5 new songs
1 new album
1 certified classic rec, because old songs need loving too
5 NEW SONGS
454 â âRIPLEYâS BELIEVE IT OR NOTâ
This week, Florida rapper 454 announced his celebrated 2024 album CASTS OF A DREAMER was available everywhere. He also dropped a video for âRIPLEYâS BELIEVE IT OR NOT,â which also came out last year but was not on that tape, where it might have been the standout.
SKIIFALL â âHer Worldâ ft. Jorja Smith
Born in St. Vincent and raised in Montreal, SKIIFALL made his name with a global rap sound designed to cross bordersâheavily indebted to his Caribbean and Canadian influences, pulling from UK drill, dancehall, and R&B. For his new EP Lovers Till Iâm Gone, he dives fully into laid-back reggae. Standout âHer Worldâ is a sumptuous lovers rock duet with Jorja Smith. Heâs also releasing a shirt with JJJJound on Monday.
Homixide Gang â âFree Agentsâ
Opium duo Homixide Gang have built their brand on the type of blown-out, metal-infused rage beats that could soundtrack Thunderdome, but they sound comfortable over a jubilant Piâerre Bourne backdrop.
Neil Young â âField of Opportunityâ
Itâs plowinâ time again. Good olâ country livinâ from another Neil Young âlostâ album, recorded in â77 around the release of American Stars ân Bars.
MIKE â âBelly 1 / Da Rocâ
When the beat drops at 1:39 you can actually feel the clouds lift out of the sky and the heavens start to creep in.
